Monk Seal Lectures At Haunama Bay

Explore the Lives of Hawaiian Monk Seals with UH Sea Grant’s Hanauma Bay Education Program

During the month of October the UH Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program will be hosting researchers and experts to explore the lives of the Hawaiian monk seal. Come to Hanauma Bay on Thursday evenings to learn about monk seals of the Main Hawaiian Islands, monk seals of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, life history, health and disease, challenges, what is being done to protect this endangered species and what you can do as an individual to assist with their recovery. The weekly series is conducted at the City and County of Honolulu ’s Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.

October 1 - “Monk Seals of the Main Hawaiian Islands: Status and Interactions” by Tracy Wurth, NOAA-PIRO/JIMAR – Monk Seal Sighting Coordinator and Biological Technician

October 8 – ““Monk Seals of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands: A Story of Survival” by Dr. Kathleen Gobush, NOAA - Monk Seal Survival Enhancement Lead and Research Ecologist

October 15 – “My Days with the Monk Seals on Laysan Island” by Patrick Ching, Resident Artist - Naturally Hawaiian and former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Employee

October 22 – “Monk Seal Health and Disease” speaker to be announced

October 29 - “Monk Seal Family Tree and Life History: A True Survivor” by Dr. Jennifer Schultz, NOAA - Monk Seal Program Researcher

As always, these events begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening in the theater at the Hanauma Bay Education Center . Events are free and open to the public, with no charge for parking after 5:30 p.m. We hope to see you on Thursday evening! These programs are supported and funded by the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation.
